Hotseating ideas in Year 5

This week has been packed full of lots of different learning experiences.

We have been exploring the book Way Home as an inspiration for our writing and as part of our lessons today we played the role of different characters and used hotseating to help generate ideas for our lessons next week.

Learning about Joseph Coelho for Black History Month

Year 5 had more fun learning about Joseph Coelho this week as part of Black History Month. We learned interesting facts about his life and wrote a non-chronological report. Our most popular facts from our research and writing related to the list of jobs he had before becoming a famous poet. His previous jobs included being an archeologist, a film extra and someone who worked in a gym. Here are a couple of pictures of the abecedarius poetry he inspired us to write and a couple of pictures of the reports we wrote in class.

Parent Teacher Meetings

Thank you to those parents who we were able to meet with this week, albeit virtually. At the bottom of the page is a list of files came up in our discussions and we thought it best to share it with all Year 5 families. The Wandsworth Test - Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning

The following two books are a great start for helping children to learn what reasoning questions look like. They are produced by Schofield and Sims and can be purchased direct but they are currently cheaper on Amazon. If possible, it would help our PTA if your purchased them through smile.amazon.co.uk as Amazon then pays our PTA a small portion of the sale.

Handwriting revision

We know that earning a pen licence is a big deal in year 5. With that in mind we have implemented a new approach to revising the handwriting taught and consolidated in class. Today, the children in year 5 have brought home a sheet of the 'c' family joins to help them improve their handwriting formation. We have covered all of these joins in class over the last few weeks. The sheet can be kept at home and returned to school next Friday so that the children can do 'a little bit of practice every day'. Next Friday, we will give out another sheet to further help children revise their letters and joins ahead of awarding some more pen licences.

Times Table Rock Stars Competition

The challenge is now live and will run until 08:50 next Friday.
