A Confident, Creative Community

Music

At Fircroft we love music and believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to compose, play, sing and listen to music from a wide range of cultures and traditions. We believe strongly in the power of music to give children an outlet for their Creativity and particularly in the role that performance opportunities can play in boosting pupils’ social skills and Confidence.

What does Music look like at Fircroft?

We have a long-standing involvement with the Wandsworth Music Service and all our curriculum lessons are taught by their specialist teachers. Lessons are based upon both the National Curriculum and the Model Music Curriculum, with learning carefully sequenced to ensure children develop both the practical skills and the theoretical knowledge (including the appropriate musical vocabulary) they need to develop as listeners, creators and performers of music. All pupils from Reception to Year 6 have a weekly music lesson and also participate in a weekly singing assembly too.

Children have many opportunities to take part in performances at Fircroft. Firstly there are many opportunities within school such as at our Achievement Assemblies and the Christmas concerts and shows. We also regularly take part in the concerts organised by the Wandworth Music Service, performing as part of a massed choir at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Croydon Fairfield Hall. We ensure that our Choir have many opportunities to perform as well, both at school events and also local community events such as the Wandsworth Mayor’s Carol Concert and the Springfield Hospital Christmas Lights Switch-On.  In addition, a musical highlight at the end of each term is our ‘Let’s Rock’ showcase concerts – enjoyed as much by the performers as by the pupils, staff and parents in the audience!

Singing Tuition

We offer singing lessons to pupils in Years 3-6 with experienced Vocal Coach, Jason Marrow. Jason has over 10 years’ experience working as a Singing Teacher, training students of all ages in pop, rock and musical theatre. Some of his students have gone on to perform in professional productions such as Matilda, Les Misérables and School of Rock.

Jason offers individual 20-minute and 30-minute lessons, as well as paired 30-minute lessons which focus on building a technical foundation through exercises and a repertoire of songs. For children wishing to work towards singing exams, this can be incorporated too.

Lessons take place on Fridays, during the school day, and are offered as a series of 10 each term. At the end of each term, Jason holds a Singing Showcase so that parents can share the songs they have worked on with their families. There are also other performance opportunities at school, such as at the Winter and Summer Fairs.

Virtual Concerts

During the pandemic, we ensured our pupils were still able to experience a broad and balanced curriculum. This extended to our music curriculum and the important opportunity to perform. So instead of live concerts that Christmas, each year group recorded a song for a festive virtual concert! You can watch the concert by clicking the link below:

Similarly, as the Music Service could also not hold live concerts, they invited schools to take part in a virtual version of their annual Winter Sounds concert. Year 5 and our Choir Club each contributed a song. To view this concert, we are at 1 hr and 12 mins in, click here:
