'Success for all, in all we do'

Fircroft's Children as Leaders

At Fircroft, we actively encourage pupil voice and ensure there are plentiful opportunities for children to take the lead in their learning, feel part of the process of continual school improvement and see themselves as part of both a local, national and global community where they can make a difference.

We run a number of highly popular initiatives, which pupils from Years 1-6 apply for in September.  Children wither complete a written application or present their credentials to the class in the form of a candidate September. These are always age-appropriate and tailored to the needs of the child.

Play Leaders

Play Leaders are Year 6 pupils, specifically chosen to help further improve opportunities for play in both the infant (Yr 1-3) and the junior (Yr 4-6) playgrounds.

At the start of the process, our Year 6 children learn a valuable life skill by having to write an application for one of these sought-after positions.

Our Play leaders are conscientious, supportive and have a friendly attitude towards younger children in our school.

 Play Leader responsibilities:

  • Setting out playground equipment (such as skipping ropes and hula-hoops), ready for playtime
  • Teaching children new games and skills
  • Making sure children who look or feel 'left out' are asked to join in a game
  • Choosing new playground equipment
  • Running tournaments
  • Helping with sports events and the annual Fircroft Sports Day.

Our children thoroughly enjoy interacting with the Year 6 Play Leaders. One child said they enjoy learning new games and playing with their ‘big grown-up friends’.

Reading Ambassadors:

Our reading ambassador representatives are elected in September every year and serve a term of one full academic year. They must apply in writing and are tasked with sharing book reviews by their favourite authors and illustrators.  In addition they sometimes present presentations about a book, an author or illustrator, a magazine or a series they feel their peers might find interesting.
